Survival run

Are you a go-getter looking for a challenge? Survival run may be a sport for you! Its combination of running and dealing with obstacles makes it a versatile endurance sport. The course comprises a maximum of 20 participants and takes place at the Olympos track. During the course, you will learn more about what survival really is all about as well as the basic techniques. This means you will focus on running, strength training and survival techniques. The course takes five weeks (one 1.5 hour lesson per week).  
 
Programme 
Lesson 1: Introduction to survival running and practising various techniques 
Lesson 2: Basic techniques II
Lesson 3: General and specific survival strength exercises
Lesson 4: Fitness and interval training, including running techniques
Lesson 5: Competition techniques and a mini survival run

In the first two lessons you will be taught the basic techniques. It is compulsory to attend at least one of these lessons. The third lesson focuses on strength, the fourth on fitness and the running element of the sport. The fifth lesson will again centre on the specific survival run techniques including obstacle training and at the end -as a ultimate test- a mini survival run.

Location
This course takes place on the Olympos survival track. 
Directions: start walking from the Olympos forecourt and take the path between the tennis courts and the hockey pitches. Turn right immediately after the second hockey pitch and continue on the tiled path situated between the hedge and the hockey pitch. Towards the end of this path, take a left turn through the opening in the hedge and soon you will see the survival track on your right-hand side.


What to wear / bring

  • Outdoor sport shoes (that may become dirty), preferably with grip soles. 
  • Long, preferably tight, track suit bottoms.
  • Long socks. 
  • Water bottle (during breaks).


Utrecht Student Survival Society ‘Simius Hircus’
Simius Hircus is the first Utrecht Student Survival Society and was founded in 2012. The society regularly organises activities for its members. Some activities are survival-oriented, such as the building days, the runs, and the exchange with other sports clubs, other activities are social events such as the drinks parties (‘borrels’), pub crawls and weekends away. Levels may vary widely; some members run competitions while others practise survival at a recreational level. During the training course, everyone can practise at their own level. We will focus on the various techniques that are required to complete a survival run.

U.S.S.V. Simius Hircus

Since September 2012, Utrecht has its own survival run club with training course. The club was named U.S.S.V. Simius Hircus which started promoting the survival run for the students in Utrecht. The training location at Sportcentrum Olympos facilitates group trainings in preparation for the infamous survival runs. Since 2014, we organize our survival run as well covering the Uithof area.

Survival run is one of the fastest growing sports in the Netherlands. The survival run is an endurance sport which is a combination of running and tackling obstacles. Fitness, technique, strength, endurance en flexibility are all needed to participate in this challenging sport. Not only the obstacles, but a constant battle against the elements has to be taken into account. The circumstances of the terrain, the weather all play an important part in this sport.

It is possible to train two times a week. On Tuesday and Thursday from 7.00 - 9.00 PM the training is given by experiences trainers. A beginner trainer will always be present at these trainings to learn you the basic techniques. There are no obligations in our survival run club, but you can enjoy good times together. There are regular club nights at the Olympos café on every first Tuesday and third Thursday of the month. Furthermore, there are survival run-related activities on a regular basis and survival runs in the Netherlands to participate in.
