The National Heatwave Plan is now in force. It’s going to be a real sweat, especially for our outdoor sports. As your body has to work much harder in these tropical temperatures, we’re taking extra measures to ensure you can continue to train safely and responsibly.
Would you rather escape the blazing sun altogether? Then seek out the coolness: you can carry on exercising in a comfortable temperature in our gym, on the squash courts, in the spinning studio, in the MB studio and in Dance Studios 1 and 2 – as these areas are all air-conditioned!
What adjustments is Olympos making?
- Less intense: Instructors will reduce the pace and intensity of classes on the spot.
- Hydration breaks: We’ll be incorporating extra drink breaks into classes as standard.
Heat & exercise: your checklist
Would you still like to exercise in the heat? Follow these basic rules:
- Be careful with artificial grass! Our tennis courts are popular in sunny weather. Bear in mind, however, that artificial grass absorbs and retains heat. As a result, the temperature just above the court can rise even further – by as much as 10 to 15 degrees!
- Drink strategically. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Drink extra water beforehand. Tip: Top up your water bottle with a sports drink or an isotonic tablet to maintain your electrolyte (salt) levels, which you lose through sweating.
- Adjust your schedule. Exercise early in the morning or later in the evening. Stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible between noon and 6 PM.
- Dress sensibly and apply sun cream. Wear light, breathable clothing and a cap. Apply sun cream beforehand – choose one that doesn’t block your pores, so your skin can continue to sweat properly.
- Be careful with alcohol. Did you enjoy a drink on a terrace or go to a party last night? Alcohol dehydrates your body significantly, meaning you’ll overheat much more quickly in the heat. On a day like this, take it a bit easier outdoors (or opt for the air conditioning).
- Check how you’re feeling. This isn’t the time to go for a personal best. Feeling dizzy, have a headache or cramps? Stop immediately, seek out the shade and cool your wrists and neck with cold water.
